“So pleased to be here”: Lewys Benjamin speaks for the first time after signing
Lewys Benjamin expressed his delight after his season-long loan move to Chester FC from Wolverhampton Wanderers was confirmed.
The highly-rated 18-year-old goalkeeper follows in the footsteps of former loanees Harry Tyrer, Elyh Harrison and Jimmy Storer, as young keepers who the Blues will look to develop.
Benjamin pointed to the success of Storer being a big motivator for the move: “It’s definitely been a big part of my reasoning to come here,” he said.
“It will hold me to a standard as last season the club clearly did well by getting to the play-off final, that’s something for me and the team to build on.”
Despite his age, Lewys can call on his first taste of senior football for experience, after a loan stint last season at Southern League Premier Division Central outfit Stourbridge.
He said: “I think that experience will be massive, just knowing how to play in front of a proper crowd.
“Playing first-team football is a completely different game so getting used to that is key.”
After a first session with the squad, the youngster commented that he could immediately sense the tight bond within the team.
“The lads were great with me, they all introduced themselves to me straight away so I didn’t need to go to them,” said Lewys.
“Immediately I felt welcomed in by everyone, and the standard of the boys is absolutely class so it’s been a great start.”
Benjamin will go straight into Calum McIntyre’s squad ahead of our first home friendly with Salford City.
Welcome to CH1, Lewys. UTS!
