Throwback: South Shields (A)

Ahead of the Blues’ trip to South Shields this weekend, let’s take a stroll down memory lane to November 2023, when a gritty performance earned Chester all three points in the North-East.

The Mariners entered the clash with an unbeaten home record as they looked towards a potential play-off push in their first campaign in the National League North.

Charlie Caton has the best chance during the early stages for the travelling Seals, as he looked to have rounded Myles Boney in the home goal, only for the ‘keeper to scramble back to his line and block the striker’s effort from an acute angle.

The solitary goal came from the most unlikely source in defender Liam Edwards, who slid towards goal at the back post after Harrison Burke flicked Declan Weeks’ well-delivered corner towards the six-yard box.

Edwards was on hand to tap past Boney into the bottom corner to earn a valuable lead just before half-time.

Calum McIntyre’s side had to withstand pressure during the second period as South Shields looked to protect their fantastic home record.

Positive link-up from a midfield trio of Weeks, George Glendon and Elliott Whitehouse brought the Blues’ best moment after the interval but the latter dragged his strike wide of the post

The Mariners wasted a fantastic opportunity to level the scoreline with around 15 minutes left when the ball fell for Mackenzie Heaney who blasted over from around six-yards out after Martin Smith’s well-directed corner.

Some heroic defending was required but the Blues held on to secure a clean sheet and an important victory on the road.

Back the Blues on the road this Saturday. UTS!
