Preview: AFC Fylde (A)

The Blues travel to Mill Farm tonight for a tough test against AFC Fylde after Saturday’s defeat at Worksop Town.

Our most recent meeting with the Coasters saw a 1-1 draw at Mill Farm, as Kurt Willoughby equalised in the 66th minute after Connor Barrett had opened the scoring just before half time for the hosts.

    The Opposition

Craig Mahon’s side have made an impressive start to their Enterprise National League North campaign, with a record of five wins from their opening six fixtures.

The Coasters have found the back of the net at least once during each of those six games, with a fantastic total of 13 goals scored, the second-highest in the division.

Their recent four-match winning run started with a dramatic midweek success at Blackwell Meadows thanks to late strikes from Jon Ustabasi and Alex Healy-Byrne.

This was followed by narrow home wins over Kidderminster Harriers and Bedford Town, alongside a late, comeback victory at Southport, courtesy of a 96th minute winner from young striker Danny Ormerod.

    The Gaffer

Chester’s highest appearance maker since reformation, Craig Mahon, made the switch from Curzon Ashton to AFC Fylde during the summer with the objective of a swift return to the National League, following the club’s 23rd-placed finish last term.

Mahon featured on 239 occasions for the Seals between 2013-20, before a move to the Nash where he would later move into the role of player/manager.

The Irishman took the top job at the Tameside Stadium in September 2023 and led Curzon to the two highest league positions in the club’s history, seventh in 23/24 and eighth in 24/25.

    One To Watch

Promising talent Danny Ormerod has made a big impact at the start of this season and already has three Enterprise National League North goals to his name.

The 19-year-old opened the scoring in the Coasters’ win away at Darlington before netting two crucial late goals in the dramatic comeback victory over Southport at Haig Avenue.

Ormerod’s only other taste of sixth tier football was a brief loan stint with Chorley last season, in which he scored three times in just five appearances.

Despite his young age the forward has made 55 appearances in the National League over two campaigns, with an impressive record of eight goals and six assists.
