BEST EVER BLUES | Ian Mellor and Nigel Clutton join Best Ever Blues line-up

Ian ‘Spider’ Mellor and local lad Nigel Clutton are the latest members of the 1977-78 team to sign up for this month’s Best Ever Blues event in support of Chester FC’s fundraising efforts.

Chester’s Former Players Association and Chester FC Community Trust are reuniting the team that recorded the club’s highest-ever league finish – fifth in the old Division Three – for a special 40th anniversary celebration.

The evening of nostalgia and entertainment takes place in the Legends Lounge at the Swansway Chester Stadium on Friday April 6th from 7.30pm. Tickets priced £15 are on sale now and include a one-course meal with proceeds from the event splt between the Back the Blues fund and the FPA.

Mellor, who scored the winner in that season’s famous 2-1 cross-border derby victory against Wrexham at the Racecourse, and Chester-born Clutton, whose sole Football League appearance came during the campaign, will join a host of former team-mates at the fundraiser.

Jim Green, chief executive of Chester FC Community Trust, said: “We are delighted that Ian and Nigel will be attending the Best Ever Blues evening.

“The Former Players Association have worked very hard to put this event together and it promises to be a wonderful occasion and an opportunity to look back on a special season for the football club.”

Players who have committed to attend so far are: Brian Lloyd, Grenville Millington, Bob Delgado, Jim Walker, Nigel Edwards, Ian Edwards, Mike Kearney, Brynley Jones, and Ken Roberts who was the club’s general manageer at the time.

Sadly five members of the team have passed away: Trevor Storton, Stuart Mason, Paul Crossley, Paul Raynor and Ron Phillips.
