It was a season of further improvement for the Blues under Bern and Jonno – who had retained the core of their squad from the season prior. Add on top of that some quality new additions – Joel Taylor, who went on to win CFU Player of the Season – and the ever consistent Kevin Roberts.
An unbeaten start was ended in controversial fashion at Spennymoor at the end of August, but the Blues were battling for the title for a vast majority of the campaign. A dip in form prior to the curtailment of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic saw Chester end up in 6th place on PPG.
In July, they were given the opportunity to compete in the Play-Offs. A trip to Altrincham was the task, and saw the Blues fall to a three goal deficit and a man short after John Johnston’s harsh red card. They battled back in the spirited way the supporters had seen this side fight all season – but they were edged out 3-2 by the eventual winners.
