Match Preview: Peterborough Sports (h)

The Blues will look to build on a positive Bank Holiday weekend when Peterborough Sports travel to the Deva Stadium on Saturday.

A last-minute Kurt Willoughby stunner and two goals from Charlie Caton earned three points against Scarborough Athletic on Monday, while the same pair got one each on the road at Alfreton Town to claim a point last Saturday.

This weekend’s opponents also had a good Bank Holiday weekend, with two wins from two, one at home against Buxton and one away at King’s Lynn Town.

    THE OPPOSITION

The Turbines have the same record as the Seals from their opening five matches: two wins, one draw and two defeats.

Sports had a tough start, with two 1-0 defeats against both Chorley and Warrington Town.

In their first two seasons at this level the club grabbed two mid-table finishes, 14th in their first campaign and 15th last term.

The Turbines’ journey to the National League North saw a meteoric rise, with four promotions in six years, in the 2015/16, 16/17, 18/19 and 21/22 campaigns.

Calum McIntyre’s men claimed a memorable victory when we last met down CH1, as Charlie Caton, Adam Thomas and Reece Daly scored in a 3-2 win.

    THE GAFFERS

Peterborough Sports are joint managed by Luke Steele and Michael Gash, who both had extensive playing careers and are in the early stages of their managerial endeavours.

The former had a distinguished career as goalkeeper, starting out at Manchester United before featuring for clubs such as Coventry City, West Bromwich Albion and Panathanikos.

The 39-year-old played in non-league football for the final few years of his career with Stamford and Deeping Rangers, before joining up with Peterborough Sports.

Meanwhile, Gash played for a plethora of clubs, most notably at Cambridge United, Kidderminster Harriers and King’s Lynn Town.

The 37-year-old joined Sports in 2021 and he played a major role in the club’s promotion to the National League North in the 21/22 campaign.

    ONE TO WATCH

Dion Sembie-Ferris moved to Cambridgeshire this summer after departing Scunthorpe United.

It is the 28-year-old’s third spell at PIMS Park, after he first joined in 2018 from St. Neots Town, and then again last season when he was brought in on loan from the Iron.

This campaign has started brightly for Sembie-Ferris, with a goal that claimed a point at Edgar Street against Hereford and an assist in the impressive victory over King’s Lynn Town.

The forward registered eight goals last season, four that helped Scunthorpe’s attempted promotion push, and four that helped the Turbines comfortably avoid a relegation battle.
