MATCH PREVIEW | Southport vs Chester

The Blues play their first Buildbase FA Trophy match of the season tomorrow – Southport are the opponents in the Third Qualifying Round.

As ever, the FA Trophy signifies an opportunity for a run to Wembley for the final in May. Following last seasons relegation, Chester are one win away from the First Round Proper.

Last season, it was victory in Round One on penalties against AFC Fylde following a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes at the Swansway. Round Two brought an away draw at East Thurrock United, with the Blues coming unstuck in a 1-0 loss.

This term they have been drawn away to a fellow National League North side – and an in-form one in Southport. The Sandgrounders have won their last four matches in all competitions. A fantastic run after what was a surprisingly poor start to the campaign – they are now out of the bottom three in the NLN and have an FA Cup Second Round tie at Tranmere in nine days time.

Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley’s side may have benefitted from a week off since Leamington. It has been the first week without a Tuesday game for them since since the middle of October. A gruelling schedule saw the Blues play eight games in 26 days. They were unfortunate in defeat in their last game at the New Windmill Ground, a 1-0 loss.

Former Blues expected to feature are Ryan Astles, who scored Southport’s late winner at Boston United last Saturday, and loanee Jordan Archer.

    Kick off tomorrow is 3pm.
