Match Report: Chester 0-0 Southport

The Blues were held to a point by Southport after a game of few chances down CH1.

The contest kicked off in quiet fashion at the Deva Stadium, as both sides cancelled each other out in the early stages.

Declan Weeks’ floated corner provided the first sight of goal for the Blues but Harrison Burke’s header looped into the hands of Chris Renshaw.

The ball then fell to Tom Peers on the edge of the 18-yard box at the mid-way point of the half, but his drilled strike rolled just wide of the far post.

A similar opportunity followed just after the half-hour mark, but once again Peers’ effort bounced past the woodwork.

There was limited action at either end in the final moments of the first period, as the score remained goalless.

Jack Bainbridge had the first chance after the break against his former club when he was found by a clever corner routine.

Bainbridge struck with power towards goal but Sonny Hilton blocked on the line in acrobatic fashion.

Veteran defender Nathaniel Knight-Percival had the Sandgrounders’ best chance of the contest just after the mid-way point of the half when he connected with a floated free-kick but his header bounced wide from close-range.

The Southport number six had another chance as the clocked ticked over 90 minutes as his header escaped the hands of Elyh Harrison but it was cleared off the line before the rebound was deflected behind for a corner.

Calum McIntyre’s men had two opportunities from two substitutes in additional time but George Glendon’s effort floated wide before Kurt Willoughby’s volley from around 200 yards out was saved by Chris Renshaw.

A trip to Buxton is next up for the Seals after a quiet start to 2025 at the Deva Stadium.
