PREVIEW | Chester v Aldershot

The Blues will be looking to bounce back from Sunday’s Cross-Border Derby defeat this weekend, as promotion chasing Aldershot Town visit the Swansway Chester Stadium.

A 2-0 defeat to Wrexham last time out was disappointing, but Marcus Bignot’s side can again take positives from their performance in the first hour against a top seven side. It was almost identical to the Dover clash in Chester’s last home game – another 2-0 loss.

Torquay’s victory away at Leyton Orient in midweek means the Blues now sit 23rd in the National League table – they remain six points from safety but Barrow have three games in hand.

Marcus Bignot will be hoping Gary Roberts has recovered from his injury which forced him out of the Wrexham game on Sunday.

Aldershot will be making the trip looking for a big response. A disastrous 7-1 defeat against the ever-dangerous AFC Fylde last weekend was another prime example of how unexpected the National League can be.

Despite this defeat, Aldershot still look solid in 5th place in the table – eight points behind the leaders Macclesfield Town.

Chester can be buoyed by recent form against the Shots, winning this fixture 2-0 last season at the Swansway in December 2016.

    What the Gaffer said

“It will be nice to concentrate on the football. It’s been another week where we’ve had to do our work away from the pitch. But now, having Neil Young in to support me and the football club – we’re delighted. They (Aldershot) have come off the back of a hammering. I know Gary (Waddock) well from my QPR days and they are one of the best teams in this league. He knows how to get out this division and I’m sure he will get a reaction out of his team. Our performances have been encouraging recently – we’ve been competitive. But it’s about the next stage. How we turn these performances into results.”
     Marcus Bignot – Manager

    One to Watch

    Scott Rendell – Striker

The 31-year-old experienced striker is sure to be a handful for the Blues back line tomorrow. The striker has played for no less than 15 different clubs in his professional career – but was most prolific at the Shots’ rivals Woking. He scored 34 goals in 59 games for the Cards between 2014 and 2016 – before making the controversial switch in that summer. He scored 14 goals last term as Aldershot reached the Play-Off Semi Finals – losing to Tranmere Rovers. Rendell has nine goals to his name this term – as Gary Waddock’s side look to go one better this year in the quest for promotion.
