Preview: Curzon Ashton (H)

The Blues look to bounce back in immediate fashion after Saturday’s disappointment at Chorley with a home clash against Curzon Ashton.

Calum McIntyre’s side were reduced to 10 men in the first ten minutes after Jack Bainbridge was shown a red card.

The Magpies took advantage of their man advantage early in the second period, as a nine-minute spell produced three goals, courtesy of midfielder Mike Calveley, striker Jack Sampson and an unfortunate own goal from Tom Leak.

    The Opposition

The Nash will look to build on a second successive top-eight finish last term, as Craig Mahon’s side missed out on the play-offs on goal difference to Buxton.

A third play-off push in a row has started in slow fashion, after two draws from their first two fixtures.

The opening day saw a repeat of last season’s final day contest as the Tameside Stadium hosted Leamington, and in identical fashion to the meeting in April, both sides were forced to settle for a point.

Bradley Holmes opened the scoring for the hosts midway through the second period, only for the Brakes to equalise four minutes later through Miro Paris.

It was a similar story in the Nash’s first away encounter of the campaign at newly-promoted AFC Telford United, as Ben Darby grabbed the opener in the 85th minute but Curzon were pegged back once again, this time through an injury-time equaliser from Orrin Pendley.

    The Gaffer

After two successful seasons Craig Mahon decided to switch the Nash for the vacant managerial post at AFC Fylde, after the Coasters’ relegation from the National League.

Curzon decided that continuation was key and therefore promoted Mahon’s assistant, Mark Bradshaw, to the top job.

The 55-year-old has had an involvement at the Greater Manchester-based outfit for the previous two decades, and will be backed by Assistant Manager Jack Salkeld, who also has held roles at Curzon over recent seasons.

Bradshaw’s playing days started with Blackpool in 1986, before long stints at Stafford Rangers, Macclesfield Town and Halifax, whom he turned out for on over 100 occasions.

    One To Watch

The signing of young forward Tony Weston has excited Curzon fans after a youth career full of promise.

Liverpool-born, Weston left Blackpool to join the Rangers academy in 2020 as a bright, young talent.

Loans in Scotland to Partick Thistle and Cove Rangers followed for the youngster before he made the switch back to English football on a permanent basis with Derby County.

The 21-year-old underwhelmed whilst on loan at Boston United in the National League last term, but Weston hasn’t missed a minute for the Nash during their first two outings and looks to have added firepower to the front line.
