PREVIEW | Macclesfield v Chester

Chester travel across Cheshire this Easter Monday to face table toppers Macclesfield Town at Moss Rose.

John Askey’s side extended their lead at the top of the table with an injury time win over Woking on Friday. Danny Whitehead picked up the pieces to net past Baxter after Tyrone Marsh’s strike stopped in the mud, and secured the Silkmen with a vital three points in the title race.

Yesterday, it was announced Chester FC Manager Marcus Bignot will depart at the end of the season.

Bignot’s men will be looking to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat to Torquay United at the Swansway. Rhys Healey and Elliott Romain scored for the Gulls, in a win which saw them extend their gap from the Blues in the table.

The East Cheshire outfit and the Blues’ Easter Monday opponents Macclesfield have won an extraordinary 23 games already this season, and are yet to taste defeat on home turf this calendar year.

Askey’s side boast ex-Blues such as Elliott Durrell and Ryan Lloyd on their books, with the midfielders both having played influential roles in the Silkmen’s rise to the top of the National League table.

On their last outing at Moss Rose, Macclesfield showed their credentials as potential champions by clawing a 1-0 win against Gateshead after dominating the encounter from start to finish. Plymouth Argyle loanee Nathan Blissett netted the only goal of the game to secure the win.

Changes are expected for Chester tomorrow afternoon – and they will definitely be without midfielder Lucas Dawson – who was sent off against Torquay on Friday.

    One To Watch

    Danny Whitaker – Midfielder

Ever present in the Silkmen midfield, the 37-year old is a fans favourite at Moss Rose, and has featured over 400 times during two spells at the club.

Whitaker returned to link up with his boyhood side in 2013 after spells with Oldham, Port Vale and Chesterfield.

Back in January, the midfielder was rewarded with a testimonial for his services to the Silkmen over a combined nine-year stint in east Cheshire.

A wise head in the centre of the park, Whitaker has been instrumental this season and is an established leader in this successful Macclesfield side.
