Report: Worksop Town 2-1 Chester FC

    The Blues were defeated on the road at Sandy Lane by Worksop Town.

    The hosts dealt with the windy conditions well in the early stages and tested new signing George Murray-Jones on a number of occasions.

    Liam Hughes volleyed straight at the ‘keeper in the second minute before Declan Weeks made a heroic clearance off the goal line when Aaron Martin’s powerful effort looked destined to end up in the back of the net.

    Scott Burgess had the Blues’ first chance but his curled shot from the edge of the 18-yard-box was deflected to safety.

    A scramble inside the Seals’ six-yard box saw the Tigers almost break the deadlock mid-way through the first period when Lewis Witham drilled the ball towards goal, but Kev Roberts managed to clear the danger.

    The closing stages before the interval saw a lack of goal-mouth action at either end.

    A well-delivered set-piece from Declan Weeks earned the opener just five minutes after the break, as Connell Rawlinson fired home from a Tom Leak knock-down.

    The Tigers bounced back in immediate fashion through the man in-form, Aaron Martin, who swept past Murray-Jones from close-range.

    Scott Burgess almost earned the Seals second just minutes later when a clever corner routine from Weeks found our number 20, who struck with power from the edge of the box only for the ball to clip the top of the crossbar and fly over.

    Worksop took the lead shortly after, as experienced defender Luke Waterfall sent a well-directed header into the corner of the net from a set-piece.

    The Blues almost levelled late on when Nathan Woodthorpe headed towards goal from close-range but for the second time after the break, the effort was thwarted by the crossbar.

    The Seals will be back in action on Tuesday night with a trip to Mill Farm to face AFC Fylde.
