RIP John ‘Basher’ Evans

John ‘Basher’ Evans, a popular defender who made 44 appearances for his hometown club during the 1960s, has sadly passed away peacefully at the age of 83.

Growing up in Hoole, John signed part-time professional forms with the club as an 18-year-old and turned full-time aged 21, making his debut on Boxing Day 1961 against Aldershot.

Earning the nickname ‘Basher’ for his no-nonsense style, John featured on a regular basis at fullback over the next couple of seasons, but in 1964 he suffered a back injury during a game at Gillingham that ultimately resulted in his retirement in his early 20s.

John had qualified as an electrician while playing part-time and, following his retirement, forged a successful career as an electrician, including working at the Grosvenor Estate for many years. He also became an active member of the Chester Former Players’ Association, remaining a regular visitor to the Deva Stadium in later life.

John’s funeral service will take place on Thursday 5th September at St Peter’s Church, Waverton at 14:30, followed by a private family burial and a reception at the Burley Hall. Family flowers only please. Any donations to the Boys Brigade would be gratefully appreciated.

The club offers its sincere condolences to John’s family and many friends.
