Throwback: Curzon Ashton 0-1 Chester FC

Relive a classic clash with the Nash ahead of tomorrow’s Emirates FA Cup Third Qualifying Round fixture at the Deva Stadium!

The Blues travelled to the Tameside Stadium in October 2023 full of confidence after five consecutive wins in all competitions.

That streak had included FA Cup successes over Nantwich Town and Hartlepool United, alongside National League North victories over Peterborough Sports, Scunthorpe United, and Southport.

Seals shot-stopper Wyll Stanway impressed in the early stages with a fantastic stop as he palmed the ball on to the crossbar to keep out Will Hayhurst’s dangerous free-kick.

Adam Thomas had Chester’s best opportunities inside the first 45 minutes but failed to take advantage, firstly with a header that bounced just wide and then a close-range effort that flew over the bar after Elliott Whitehouse’s effort had deflected into his path.

Declan Weeks almost caught out home ‘keeper Josh Ollerenshaw mid-way through the second-half as a long-range strike bounced awkwardly and forced the shot-stopper to push behind for a corner.

Midfielder Stefan Mols had the hosts’ best chance of the second period when he was found unmarked inside the 18-yard box but his header fell straight into the hands of Stanway.

The decisive goal arrived with just six minutes to play as a flowing Blues move was finished by George Glendon.

Substitute Iwan Murray found space in midfield and played a fantastic through ball to Adam Thomas who drilled a dangerous low cross into the six-yard box where Glendon was on hand to tap home with a simple finish.

Chester held on in the dying embers of the contest to record a six successive win, before jubilant scenes after full-time in front of an army of travelling Seals who had made the trip to Greater Manchester.
