Welcome to Chester FC, Lewys Benjamin!
Chester FC are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Lewys Benjamin on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 18-year-old shot-stopper links up with Calum McIntyre’s squad for 25/26 and becomes the latest in a line of talented keepers that have made a loan move to the Deva from a Premier League club.
Benjamin is highly rated at Molineux and has featured heavily above his own age group throughout his youth career, including 11 appearances in Premier League 2 for Wolves’ U21 side last term.
High expectations for Lewys saw him travel to Marbella with Wolves’ first team in the summer of 2024 for a warm-weather camp at the age of just 17.
Benjamin started his youth career at Cardiff City before making the move to the West Midlands in 2023.
The promising talent got his first taste of senior football last season when he turned out for Southern League Premier Division Central outfit Stourbridge.
The goalkeeper has also appeared for his national team at youth level, with nine caps for Wales U19 before two caps for Wales U21 last year in clashes with Norway U21 and Slovakia U21.
Lewys becomes the Blues’ sixth summer signing and will work with a defensive unit that includes three of the new additions, as Dion Kelly-Evans, Tom Leak and James Jones all link up for 25/26.
Calum McIntyre was thrilled to get the deal over the line: “We’ve had some really talented goalkeepers here in recent seasons and the loan market is a big part of that,” he said.
“It’s something we see as really useful for us to acquire a high quality goalkeeper.
“The club’s track record with Harry Tyrer, Elyh Harrison and Jimmy Storer as well as the sale of Wyll Stanway saw a number of clubs keen to put loan options to us this summer.
“We feel Lewys is a really good addition. He is a big, athletic goalkeeper who has had some brilliant opportunities to date. He’s left footed, which was really desirable to add to the defensive unit.”
“He comes to us from a good club, we know what they’re like as people and how they’re coached and we are pleased to have taken another lad from Wolves and to continue that relationship.”
Welcome to CH1, Lewys!
