MATCH PREVIEW | Alfreton Town vs Chester

Here we go again! 91 days after our visit to Brackley Town, the new National League North season is finally set to get underway.

And there’s been plenty of change at the Deva Stadium as we enter an exciting new era. New Manager Calum McIntyre has taken over and is set to enter the dugout for his first competitive permanent fixture as Blues boss.

There could be some debuts as well this Saturday, with new exciting signings such as Alex Kenyon, Adam Thomas and Kurt Willoughby set to feature. Captain George Glendon will miss the majority of the campaign with an ACL injury, while McIntyre has also been dealt a further blow with Lewis Earl expected to be out for several weeks due to an ankle injury.

The two sides battled to a goalless draw when they last met at the end of April. Billy Heath’s Reds side made a late push for the play-offs last term, but ended up in 9th place, just two points shy of the top seven.

    PLAYER PREVIEW

New Team Captain Declan Weeks spoke to us prior to the game… “We’re all in good spirits, looking forward to the game and can’t wait to get going really.

“We’ve had a good pre-season. You need the variety of the fixtures to work on certain things. The sessions the Gaffer, Colin and Mike have put on during pre-season have been intense and given us a real benefit – hopefully it comes to fruition this weekend.”

On the KGV Sports Hub…”You know where you’re coming every training session. Even the bits like having food after training together as a group make a difference, but it’s time for us to turn this into results.”

On last season…”As nice as it was to win all those awards last season, I’d give them all back in a heartbeat to be like Gateshead and lifting that league trophy. I’m focused on that this year.”

On the importance of the fans…”The times we had the ground bouncing last year it was amazing, hopefully we can have more moments like that. They really push us on, even in the tough times it counts and makes a real difference.”
