MATCH REPORT | Chester 0-2 Southport

Two goals in three second half minutes saw the Blues bow out of the Buildbase FA Trophy this evening.

A stunning strike from David Morgan and a simple finish from Jordan Archer condemned Chester to defeat at the Swansway.

Dan Mooney had the first real sniff of goal inside the opening two minutes. Grant Shenton’s big punt downfield was latched on to by the Fleetwood loanee but he couldn’t quite sort his feet out and Dan Hanford smothered his eventual effort.

Southport’s first effort came from distance. Hanford’s high kick was well controlled by former Blue Jordan Archer – enabling Devarn Green to whistle a shot just over the bar.

In a half of little chances, it was a three minute second half spell which brought the visitors two goals.

Firstly, David Morgan broke the deadlock in style with a fizzing effort into the top corner from 30 yards.

Moments later, a Gary Stopforth backpass was pounced upon by Archer who took his time one-on-one with Shenton and slotted home.

Gary Roberts whipped a free kick over the wall late on, but it was over the crossbar.

Substitute Lloyd Marsh-Hughes showed signs of his promise, a superb storming run where he knocked Marcus Wood to the floor culminated with a delightful sliding pass for Deane Smalley; but he was denied by Hanford.
