YOUTH CUP REPORT | Clitheroe 1-4 Chester

A double apiece from strike duo Regan Rubin and Will Goodwin saw the youngsters advance in the FA Youth Cup at Shawbridge this evening.

The Yellows strikeforce were threatening in the first quarter of an hour. Rubin clipping the crossbar with a header and Goodwin having two efforts inside the box blocked.

Nevertheless, against the run of play, the hosts took the lead. Jonny Bedford beat the onrushing Alex Atton to the ball on the counter, and then slotted home from close range after 18 minutes.

But then a three-goal salvo in the space of eight minutes put Calum McIntyre’s side in firm control of the tie.

The skipper Goodwin took the game by the scruff of the neck. He firstly cut inside just shy of the half hour mark before belting an effort in at the near post to equaliser. Then five minutes later he combined with Rubin to control and volley left footed past Hodds.

Provider Rubin turned scorer on 37 minutes. Calmly cushioning a header into the net from close range after Danny Edwards’ delivery was pinpoint.

It could have been four just before the break as Tom Ruffer struck the post with a 20-yard drive, as the Seals threatened a rout.

After the break the game settled as the Blues looked to see out the remaining 45 – but they added some gloss with a fourth just after the hour mark. Rubin combined brilliantly with Goodwin once again before the former slotted home for his second.

Goodwin was denied the hat-trick by Hodds late on as he looked for his hat-trick, but it stayed at four as the Under-18’s advanced into the next round to visit Chorley in two weeks’ time.
