Preview: Peterborough Sports (a)

Following Saturday’s point against Banbury United the Blues will look to get back to winning ways on Tuesday night as Calum McIntyre’s men travel to Cambridgeshire to face Peterborough Sports.

The Turbines were held to a stalemate on Saturday at Spennymoor Town and are winless in their last four league matches after defeating Bishop’s Stortford in late December.

    THE OPPOSITION

Tuesday’s hosts were promoted from the Southern League Premier Central Division in 2021/22 after defeating Coalville Town 2-0 in the playoff final.

Last campaign the club finished in 14th, comfortably surviving in their first season in the National League North.

    THE GAFFERS

The Turbines are joint managed by Luke Steele and Michael Gash, who both had extensive playing careers and are in the early stages of their managerial endeavours.

Gash joined the club in 2021 and played a major role in the club’s promotion to the National League North in the 21/22 season.

The striker agreed to a coaching/playing role at the start of the following campaign and helped to retain the club’s sixth tier status.

The 37-year-old played for 11 clubs, most notably Cambridge United, Kidderminster Harriers and King’s Lynn Town.

Steele became joint manager in February 2023 after an impressive career including stints at Panathanikos, Barnsley and Coventry City.

    ONE TO WATCH

Goalkeeper Peter Crook is one of Sports’ most important components and picked up the Manager’s Player of the Year award last season after keeping 15 clean sheets.

The 29-year-old became a club hero during a loan stint towards the end of the 21/22 campaign when he saved two penalties during the playoff final to help secure promotion.

In recent weeks the Turbines defensive record has been fantastic, conceding just five goals in their last seven games.
